In the weeks following the loss of Bismarck, the network of supply tankers upon which the KM depended to refuel their ships on the high seas, was destroyed by the British who were able to pinpoint the location of the vital tankers. ![]() ![]() While one might argue that the withdrawl of the navy's regular warships was perhaps the wrong thing to do, in so far as it would make things easier on the Royal Navy, the British success in code breaking largely negated Hitler's decision anyway. Following the sinking of the Bismarck, Hitler's initial reaction one of extreme depression, followed by arbitrary issuing of orders forbidding commitment of the Kriegsmarine's surviving heavy surface units to Atlantic raids and a determination to bring Scharnhorst and Gneisenau back to home waters from their port in the Bay of Biscay. ![]()
